The Ultimate Off-Grid Solution

Powering Remote Locations With Flexible Renewable Energy

Viridi’s RPS150 Mobile Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is engineered to operate in remote, rugged, and challenging environments where safe, reliable power is essential.

The RPS150 is designed with passive Fail-Safe Anti-Propagation technology, which dramatically mitigates the risks of thermal runaway events associated with lithium-ion batteries. The RPS150 can be charged via grid connection, AC generators, or clean renewable sources such as solar and wind. This flexibility makes it the ideal solution for storing renewable energy, on-site, for off-grid, isolated, rugged communities.

Challenge

Community Through Colors, a not-for-profit community organization manages La Finca de Hamberto, an organic farm and community food storage hub in Vieques, a 50 mi2 island, east of mainland Puerto Rico, with a population of 9,500. To help provide a resilient energy solution at the farm following hurricanes, the Abruña Energy Initiative needed a safe, mobile, and dependable energy storage system. The system had to store excess solar energy for later use as backup power to mitigate frequent grid outages. Traditional mobile storage solutions posed fire safety risks in Vieques’ harsh environment, and diesel generators were cost-prohibitive due to high local fuel prices and unreliable supply. The Viridi RPS150 was selected as the ideal solution to meet these challenges.

Result

For the first time, this remote farming community will be able to serve as a disaster relief center for Vieques residents, offering food, communications, shelter and electricity even after tropical storms.

Viridi successfully deployed the RPS150 to meet the initiative’s objectives and the farm’s needs while Community Through Colors integrated solar panels and three off-grid solar inverters. Without a grid connection, the RPS150 stored surplus solar energy and delivered backup power for critical loads, including cold storage, emergency lighting, communications, and water purification systems. Today, the Abruña Energy Initiative operates as a resilient inland hub, ensuring Vieques residents have a safe refuge and reliable electricity during and following tropical storms.
