Twelve RPS50 lithium-ion batteries installed in a dedicated room at HWI. No incremental cooling, ventilation, or fire suppression is needed with Viridi BESS (those seen in the photo were pre-existing and were not removed).
HWI is a world-leading medical research center that requires a consistent and reliable source of electricity to power its advanced equipment. To meet their electricity needs, in 2021 they decided to implement the largest battery system installed within an occupied space in the nation. This marks a significant moment in the adoption of distributed energy resources.
HWI was bolstering their research equipment with cryo-electron microscopes. There were two barriers to implementation that set the stage for Viridi’s solution: 1) the electrical service to the facility was not larger enough to support operation of the microscopes atop facility peak load. 2) these microscopes are highly sensitive and require clean power free of distortion in the waveform of power from grid that would ruin experiments.
Viridi’s fail-safe energy storage system allows HWI to provide clean power (waveform) to the sensitive equipment and to programmatically peak shave. Now, the battery charges when facility power draw is less than 500kW and discharges when their power demand gets above 750kW.
