One of the largest investor-owned utilities in the U.S. serves over 20 million customers in New York and Massachusetts. Their communication towers must operate during power outages, but keeping them operational is costly, especially in remote locations like this mountainside site with limited access. These towers rely on diesel generators, which demand regular maintenance and refueling during extended outages, resulting in significant expenses across hundreds of sites.

Challenge

Outages often require technicians to prioritize repairs over refueling or maintaining remote generators, adding cost and operational strain. Even during normal operations, maintaining these towers consumes extensive man-hours and capital. Additionally, their low average power draw is inefficient for diesel generators engines, leading to performance issues.

Opportunity

Viridi’s RPSLink offers a cost-effective solution for remote sites. These systems require minimal maintenance, can charge from grid, renewables, or generators, and include telematics for real-time monitoring. This 100kWh system will deliver ~48hrs of primary backup, and the existing diesel generator was kept in place as a secondary redundant power source for prolonged outages like severe winter storms.
